Adversity fails to derail Gahanna Lincoln’s season

Gahanna Lincoln's Kimora Perkins guards Reynoldsburg's Makiya Miller during a Division I Regional semi-final match March 1 at Westerville South. The Lions, who lost 72-48, finished 16-9 overall and captured the OCC-Ohio Division title at 9-1.

During the third quarter of a tight Division I district semi-final against an Olentangy Liberty team they lost to during the regular season, Gahanna Lincoln’s women’s basketball team turned two interceptions into layups and added a 3-pointer to build a nine-point lead.

This streak highlighted the keys to the Lions’ race to a regional semi-final: wreaking havoc with their defense and creating easy baskets with their speed.

“We’re a small basketball team, so our job is to go out there and try to step up the game and force as many turnovers as possible,” coach Ron Bailey said. “(We) faced a lot of adversity.”

One of the biggest hurdles the Lions had to overcome was the loss of senior striker Bella Ward, a Xavier hire who battled shin splints in December and then suffered an ankle injury late season in a 64-40 loss to Dublin Coffman in January. 4.
