RICHMOND, Va. (February 23, 2022) – The CAA announced its weekly winners in men’s and women’s tennis on Wednesday. James Madison Jr. Holden Koon and the Hofstra junior doubles team Bo Cautaerts and Ostap Kovalenko received male honors. Women’s tennis accolades went to junior Delaware Isabelle Montana and the UNCW Junior Doubles Team Zoe Huffman and freshman Stele Joksimovic.

CAA Male Tennis Player of the Week
Holden Koons, Jr., James Madison (York, PA)

Koons posted a 2-1 No. 1 singles record while playing three straight-set matches for JMU last week. The junior beat Radford’s Demis Taramonlis, 6-4, 6-7(3), 7-6(3) to clinch the Dukes team’s 6-1 victory over the Highlanders. He also won the game in a 4-3 triumph over Northern Illinois as he rallied for a 2-6, 6-2, 6-3 win over NIU’s Kristopher Ortega. Koons ended his week with a 6-7(3), 6-3, 6-4 loss to Youngstown State’s Laurentiu Mandocescu that ended his six-game winning streak.

CAA Men’s Tennis Doubles Team of the Week

Bo Cautaerts, Jr., Hofstra (Brussels, Belgium)

Ostap Kovalenko, Jr., Hofstra (Bashkortostan, Russia)

Cautaerts and Kovalenko went 2-0 in doubles No. 1 last week to help Hofstra earn the doubles point in matches with LIU and Lehigh. The Pride duo outlasted LIU’s Ben Brandherm and Danila Ishchanka 7-6 (11-9) to clinch the doubles point in a 6-1 team win. They followed that up with a 6-2 win over Lehigh’s Zack Elliott and Marc Blekhman. Kovalenko was also 2-0 for second place in singles last week, while Cautaerts was 1-1 for first place in singles.

CAA Women’s Tennis Player of the Week

Isabella Montana, Jr., Delaware (Miami, Florida)

Montana went a combined 4-0 in singles and doubles as Delaware beat Big Ten foes Rutgers (6-1) and LIU (7-0) to improve to 6-1 this season. Playing fifth in singles, the junior won the match against Rutgers with a 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 win over Minchae Kim. She overtook LIU’s Bianca Compuesto, 6-0, 6-4, to bring her winning streak to five. Montana and partner Samantha Svendsen also went 2-0 at the No. 2 double and picked up the doubles point in both games.

CAA Women’s Tennis Doubles Team of the Week

Zoe Huffman, Jr. UNCW (Maiden, North Carolina)

Stela Joksimovic, Father, UNCW (Chapel Hill, North Carolina)

Huffman and Joksimovic were 2-0 in No. 2 doubles as UNCW got the doubles point in both wins over state foes Gardner-Webb (5-2) and East Carolina (6-1) last week. The duo secured the doubles point against Gardner-Webb with a 6-3 win over Teodora Ristic and Maria Jardim. They followed that up with a 6-1 triumph over ECU’s Alisa Diercksen and Sofia Cerezo Holgado, improving their season record to 4-1.
