Women's tennis No. 1 sweeps Missouri, 7-0

AUSTIN, TX –The No. 1 University of Texas women’s tennis team recorded a 7-0 victory over Missouri on Sunday afternoon inside the Edgar O. and Melanie A. Weller Tennis Center. The Longhorns improved to 5-0 in doubles this year, while Missouri fell to 2-1.

Texas claimed a 1-0 advantage after quickly winning the doubles point. The second tandem of Kylie Collins and Peyton Stearn posted a 6-0 shutout on Court 1 against Romary Cardenas and Valentina Vazquez. Second year Charlotte Chavatipon and freshman Vivian Ovrootsky then clinched the doubles point with a 6-2 win on Court 2 over Elys Ventura and Ellie Wright. Leading 3-2, Chavatipon and Ovrootsky held serve, broke the Missouri pair on a two point run and again held serve to close the game.

Ovrootsky cruised to a 6-2, 6-1 win on Court 4 over Cardenas to improve to 4-0 in the singles doubles match. Chavatipon quickly followed with a 6-1, 6-2 win on Court 3 over Wright to increase UT’s lead to 3-0.

Stearns secured the overall doubles match win for the Longhorns with a 6-3, 6-3 victory on Court 1 over Bronte Murgett. Trailing 2-1 in the second set, Stearns won five of the next six matches to close out her match and move to 7-0 on aggregate in singles, including a 4-0 mark in doubles.

Play remaining matches to completion, Year Two No. 117 Malaika Rapolu rallied for a 2-6, 6-2, 1-0 (10-5) win on Court 5 over Valentina Vazquez. Down a set and tied at 2-2 in the second set, Rapolu won four straight games to claim the second set (6-2). Trailing 4-3 in the third-set super tiebreaker, Rapolu won five straight points to take an 8-4 lead and closed out a 10-5 win in the breaker.

First-year student Allura Zamaripa added a 6-1, 1-6, 7-5 win on Court 6 over Ventura. Tied at 5-5 in the third set, Zamarripa held serve then broke Ventura to complete the win.

Collins No. 40 completed the sweep with a 7-5, 7-5 win on Court 2 over Gabriela Martinez. Collins battled from a 3-1 deficit in the first set to win three of the next four games and tie the set at 4-4. Tied at 5-5, she won the next two matches to take the first set. Trailing 5-4 in the second set, Collins broke Martinez, held serve, then broke Martinez again to close out the win.

The Longhorns return to action when they compete in the ITA National Team Indoor Championship Feb. 11-14 (Friday-Monday) in Madison, Wisconsin. The draws for the ITA Indoor Nationals will be announced on Tuesday, February 8.
